One of things I find most fascinating is when people believe things for really bad reasons. I find homeopathy pretty bad. If you read up on it you’ll find that there isn’t one single part of it that makes sense. But there’s worse: Shenton turns out to have resolutely mainstream views on most issues. The [...]

Although this movie doesn’t star any members of the Flight of the Conchords (see: Eagle vs Shark), it does pit something that flies against a shark. And it looks amazing–in one sense of the word. Exhibit A: The movie is Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus and, thanks to Stephen Taubman, it even has a science [...]

New footage of JFK and Jackie-O surfaced recentley. Ward Warren was fifteen when he shot this footage the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. It’s beautiful, slow, 8mm footage of Airforce One and Airforce Two landing and the presidential couple exiting the plane. Check it out at the Sixth Floor Museum.

There is tons of great journalism, fiction, photography, poetry out there in the world of blogs (I hate the term blogosphere). Problem is that for every Moby Dick of the blog world there are at least a thousand Atlas Shruggeds–if you get my drift. It’s too bad there’s no blog police or something of that [...]

Called lucid dreaming, it happens when a part of your brain called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex wakes up while you’re still [...]

If someone asked me why I love music, and why I loved rock music especially, I would play them Rhiannon by the holy mid-tempo gods, Fleetwood Mac. This song can knock me out of any funk you can imagine. Just gored by a bull? Put on Rhiannon. Your girlfriend just had a threesome with a [...]

It’s hard to say it’s not saddening when two great American artists and minds die in the same week, then again they were 87 and 91 respectively. And for one of them, it seems as though the majority of his work might still to be published–and I will be holding me breath. Here’s a great [...]

From Jennifer Michael Hecht’s book Doubt: With the gods gone, the universe seemed like a dead place of violence and chance and we human beings the minuscule representatives of our own emotive fantasy. All that is left of this fantasy is what we maintain in our own civilized, cultured behavior–little creatures holding back the encroachment [...]
