5 minutes on the philosophy of science
Filed under: Ideas by Jeremy on Thursday, 25th November 2010 at 12:53 pmIf you’ve got five minutes and have ever wondered why people seem to have so much confidence in how science works, check out this video. It’s by scientist-turned-philosopher Massimo Pigliucci, and while I don’t always agree with his views on all things (this shouldn’t be surprising since I’m sure anyone would have difficulty finding someone they agree with on everything), I still find he’s a source for some great reading and great ideas. Here’s a quote from the video to pique your interest:
“Discovery, in the sense of a scientists ability to come up with new ideas, is a non-rational process. Scientists, just like the rest of us, come up with new ideas in all sorts of weird situations like while taking a shower, going on a walk, after sleeping, or even while being on drugs.”
