There’s an interview on wired.com with photographer Richard Nicholson and his new book, Analog, The Last One Out, Please Turn On The Light. The book is comprised of 4×5 photographs of various darkrooms in London. A celebration of analog photography. The kind of photography that takes years to master. The kind of photography that I still practice and the kind of photography that made me fall in love with it.
I always wanted a darkroom. But, by the time I finished photography school, wayback in 2002, digital photography had not only met the chief of analog photography, but was also plotting how he was going to wipe out the whole tribe…so to speak. Darkroom techniques are not taught at my old school, they haven’t for years now. It’s sad. Photography is not meant to be worked on from a computer. Anyway, old guy shutting up…
The end of 2010 marked the end of Kodakchrome, arguably the greatest and most famous colour film ever. It is now impossible to process the film. If there are any undeveloped rolls in the world, forget it. Those photos are gone. Not all is lost in analog photography, however, Impossible film surfaced in 2010 and it’s amazing. Basically, they are the new polaroid. They’re from the Netherlands but have a store in New York City. They are adding new types of film all the time. I’ve shot some packs on my SX70 and it’s awesome. Fucking awesome. I’ll be in New York next week, let me know if you need any. Saves 11$ in shipping.
