The “10 Canadians like Craig” award show

I wrote a post about Shad at some point but last week–before he even found out he beat out Drake for the Juno for rap recording of the year–he said something that’s worth repeating for those who missed it. Shad isn’t just all class, he’s a quality human being.
In an article he wrote for the Vancouver Sun last week, he wondered why we have awards shows for music for not for other Canadians who deserve recognition?
I know a guy named Craig who lives in the Downtown Eastside with his wife and kids, and they invite people off the streets to have dinner at their place every night. They cook meals together and all clean up together afterwards. If their guests need a place to crash, they spend the night. If they want to get into a rehab centre but haven’t been sober for the required minimum amount of time (usually three days), Craig and his wife help them through that very hard interim. When I asked Craig where he got his training for that kind of work, he said he just learned on the fly because there was a need for it in his neighbourhood.
Now don’t get me wrong, I would probably kill Craig in a freestyle battle, but I think it’s equally indisputable that Craig deserves to be honoured for his work at least as much as I do.
So let me propose a solution. How about this for next year’s Junos?
Ten of the year’s biggest musicians present awards to 10 Canadians like Craig who have devoted their lives to building a better society. Throw in some performances and there you go; the music industry still gets to showcase its stars and new talent, but instead of just promoting ourselves we’d be promoting values that are important to all of us.
I love it. In fact, I’d be more inclined to watch this than the actual Junos which I didn’t watch.
