Conan O’Brien presents Stinky Pete
Filed under: Ideas by Jeremy on Wednesday, 15th June 2011 at 9:22 amIt’s been pretty serious on RadarLake for the past while so I’m going to tone it down a bit today.
Recently, the University of Alberta’s Dean of Medicine allegedly plagiarized his commencement address from Dr. Atul Gawande. At least he picked a good source to plagiarize. If you’re at all interested in medical non-fiction, Gawande–part surgeon part staff writer at the New Yorker–is your man. He’s a surgeon and staff writer for the New Yorker. But the Dean’s plagiarism was so blatant that at least one person in the audience was following along on their smartphone. Many have called for the dean to be held to the same standards as students–plagiarism is a serious offense and grounds for dismissal–and I tend to agree. But it doesn’t appear as if he plans to step down so, in case he’s planning to ever give another commencement (which doesn’t sound very likely), here’s how you do it.
Conan’s O’Brien’s commencement speech at Dartmouth College is both rolling on the floor funny and, in a way only great comedians can do, leaves audience with great advice. Oh, and he calls the President of Darmouth College Dr. Jim Kim–a man who is a great friend for Dr. Paul Farmer and a hero of the global health world– he calls this distinguished person Stinky Pete for no other reason than because he can.
