Last year, Montreal’s, Da Gryptions released “The Bixi Anthem-It’s A Free Ride” about Montreal’s free all-access-pay-as-you-go-city-wide bike system. Catchy hooks, clever lyrics, an abundance of Expos’ gear (all good things), it had it all. The Bixi song was produced by Stephen Ramsay of Young Galaxy and the band features members of bands, bars etc from Montreal.
Just in time for this summer, DG’s have put out, “It’s BBQ time”. Slightly more R&B than “Bixi”, but catchy nonetheless. The Montreal sports team paraphernalia is present plus many shots of Quebec beer that comes in the ever popular “tall boy” format. If you like bbq’s, the Expos or haven’t been to Montreal in a while, check the videos out below.

The new Beastie Boys video, directed by MCA, has premiered that features fresh new tracks from the New York threesome. The music is refreshingly amazing. Almost a psychedelic take on hip hop that I’ve never heard before. Nice indeed. But also, this almost-thirty minute video has so many actor cameos it’s incredible. It stars Danny Mcbride, Seth Rogan and Elijah Wood. Also, Ted Danson, Steve Buscemi and even Alicia Silverstone make small appearances alongside a plethora of other comedic talents such as Rainn Wilson, Jason Swartzman and Chloe Sevigny (the latter not being a comedic talent per se). A dance-off featuring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly is the obvious highlight of the video. It is actually 30 minutes long, so if you’re at work, this will kill a good portion of the day for you.

The book is comprised of 4×5 photographs of various darkrooms in London. A celebration of analog photography. The kind of photography that takes years to master. The kind of photography that I still practice and the kind of photography that made me fall in love with it.

I always wanted a darkroom. But, by the time I finished photography school, wayback in 2002, digital photography had not only met the chief of analog photography, but was also plotting how he was going to wipe out the whole tribe…so to speak. Darkroom techniques are not taught at my old school, they haven’t for years now. It’s sad. Photography is not meant to be worked on from a computer. Anyway, old guy shutting up…

The end of 2010 marked the end of Kodakchrome, arguably the greatest and most famous colour film ever. It is now impossible to process the film. If there are any undeveloped rolls in the world, forget it. Those photos are gone. Not all is lost in analog photography, however, Impossible film surfaced in 2010 and it’s amazing. Basically, they are the new polaroid. They’re from the Netherlands but have a store in New York City. They are adding new types of film all the time. I’ve shot some packs on my SX70 and it’s awesome. Fucking awesome. I’ll be in New York next week, let me know if you need any. Saves 11$ in shipping.

A couple of interesting things I’ve read recently:

Should we tinker with plants genes. Includes a couple insightful letters the blogger, Pamela Ronald, received after writing an op-ed in the NY Times. She makes a couple great points about contradictions in what we consider organic agriculture and why we need to disentangle the ideas of genetically engineered crops and ownership of seed by big agribusiness: “So a small farmer that uses GE papaya to protect her crop from a devastating disease that cannot be controlled by any known method, developed in a university lab by a local Hawaiian using government funds (not for profit), cannot be certified organic. In contrast, a large grower that purchases Monsanto seed and plants a monoculture can be certified organic.”

Moonshine or the kids? A controversial read from the NY Times that points out that poor families are just as prone to making poor financial decisions as the rich. Aid critic Bill Easterly has an interesting commentary on this article as well as change.org.

Living in denial: why sensible people reject the truth. One of the New Scientists’ recent issues is devoted to exploring denialism, when people choose to believe something with little to no evidence over established “truths”. If you’re interested in this kind of thing you should check out Michael Spectre’s book Denialism and you can catch him in podcast form at Point of Inquiry.

Though I’ve found that TED talks have been rather disappointing recently, here is a great one by Esther Duflo (whose research, incidentally, is talked about in the NY Times op-ed mentioned above):

But you can also “meet” her so to speak. As far as I understand you just sit across from her and have a staring contest. People have sat for hours and stared at her one on one. There’s a live feed here during museum hours. Also, there’s a site here that has sharp portraits of people who the artist has made cry and the amount of time it took (4 mins to a mind boggling 391 mins!). The exhibition ends May 31.
