The Weather Of Where You Are

The ultimate dangers of time travel aren’t in particle displacement,
or of where you might be put back together,
the reconfiguring of the atoms in your hand
or even the reunion of who you thought you were,
but the real danger is in the falsehoods of your destination
The true danger for the tourist is in the hands of the [...]

People who think of others tend to be more creative

An interesting article from a magazine I’ve just started exploring: Miller-McCune. From their website comes an article stating that empathy may drive workplace creativity:
Writing in the Academy of Management Journal, Adam Grant of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and James Berry of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill report “intrinsic motivation is [...]

Meet Daniel Shenton, President of the Flat Earth Society

One of things I find most fascinating is when people believe things for really bad reasons. I find homeopathy pretty bad. If you read up on it you’ll find that there isn’t one single part of it that makes sense. But there’s worse:
Shenton turns out to have resolutely mainstream views on most issues. The 33-year-old [...]

Jumbo Jet vs. Shark

Although this movie doesn’t star any members of the Flight of the Conchords (see: Eagle vs Shark), it does pit something that flies against a shark. And it looks amazing–in one sense of the word.
Exhibit A:

The movie is Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus and, thanks to Stephen Taubman, it even has a science component to [...]

New JFK Footage

New footage of JFK and Jackie-O surfaced recentley. Ward Warren was fifteen when he shot this footage the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. It’s beautiful, slow, 8mm footage of Airforce One and Airforce Two landing and the presidential couple exiting the plane. Check it out at the Sixth Floor Museum.

Worth your time: Mind Hacks

There is tons of great journalism, fiction, photography, poetry out there in the world of blogs (I hate the term blogosphere). Problem is that for every Moby Dick of the blog world there are at least a thousand Atlas Shruggeds–if you get my drift. It’s too bad there’s no blog police or something of that [...]

Weekend listening: This Must be the Song

If it wasn’t for the fact that he’s older than my mother, I’d think David Byrne was my long lost brother. There are some strange commonalities like our possibly unhealthy obsession with all things Brazilian (he loves a type of traditional type of Brazilian music called Forro) and with city biking (he has designed bike [...]

NarcoCorrido: The New Gangsta Rap

I just caught wind of of a new musical style sweeping the nation of Mexico, songs about drugs and gangterism! Crazy huh? I know what you’re thinking, “yeah Ese, I’ve heard Cock The Hammer by Cypress Hill, I had Black Sunday in the eighth grade!” But I’m not talking about gangsta rap. No, it’s [...]

While I was out

A strange thing happened to me last night. At some point, during a normal night of REM sleep and vivid dreams, I began to realize I was dreaming. That in itself isn’t so strange. Called lucid dreaming, it happens when a part of your brain called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex wakes up while you’re still [...]

Peters’ Pick: Now Featuring Words Such As “Dulcet” and “Mid-tempo Gods”

If someone asked me why I love music, and why I loved rock music especially, I would play them Rhiannon by the holy mid-tempo gods, Fleetwood Mac. This song can knock me out of any funk you can imagine. Just gored by a bull? Put on Rhiannon. Your girlfriend just had a threesome with a [...]
